Marital Conflict among Parents and Its Effect on their Adolescents , Behaviors

Abstract

Background: Marital conflict has been associated with many problems during adolescence such as conduct problems, aggression, and antisocial behavior, as well as internalizing problems, such as depression, anxiety, withdrawal, lack of confidence and self-esteem. The purpose of this study was to assess the effect of marital conflict among parents on their adolescents’ behaviors. Design: A descriptive correlational design was utilized. Setting: The study was conducted in preparatory, secondary and high industrial schools at Shebin El-kom City and Shanawan village, Egypt. Sample: A purposive sample of 250 adolescents was selected. Three Instruments were utilized for collection of data: Social characteristics structured interview questionnaire, Self-Reported Strengths and difficulties questionnaire and kansas marital conflict scale. Results: It was found that there was a highly statistical significant positive correlation between total marital conflict score and total behavioral score. The study concluded that there was a significant relationship between parents’ marital conflict and their adolescents’ behavior. Therefore, it was recommended that parents of adolescents with behavioral problems should be included in the comprehensive intervention program on, social services and assistance to improve the social and psychological functioning of parents who experience marital conflict and the effect of this conflict on their adolescents' behaviors
